What is Internet Phone

Internet phone is a short form to call Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a new technology that allows voice communications can be done over internet protocol systems such as internet or packed-switched networks.  Technically you can connect a handset that looks and works similar to a phone but gets connect to internet instead of regular phone line.  This technology allows the minimum costs of calling or even free if the both users use internet phone for communication.  There are plenty of internet phone applications offered by multiple carriers in the market.

It is easy to learn how to use it and it does not require huge investment in equipment.  I assume most households have internet either through the phone line or cable.  All you have to do is to plug the telephone into a voice box your internet phone company provides to you.  There you have it now you can use the phone that is being connected to the internet like any regular phone that you have been using.  Alternatively you can try softphones which are a combination of earphones and speakers that allow you to connect these devices into your computers through USB ports, then you can have portable internet phones anywhere you go as long as there is internet access.

Internet phone allows users to administer their phone calls forwarding and ring preferences with maximum flexibility.  This proves to be superior over cell phone because cell phone only works within cell phone range.  They do have a special feature called web based voicemail, in which you receive notification by email straight to any forwarding phone that you set earlier.  This allows you to pick up your voice messages in random access order.

Although the advantages of internet phone seem quite obvious; it is in fact not for every one.  Since VoiP hardware and software are easy to find and get setup the system still can not give you full features of hands off phone service.  And importantly the quality of VoiP is varied.  In best case scenario, the quality is crystal clear, sometimes it is even better than regular phone especially when for long distance calls.  But quality gets deteriorates if the transmission is going through a congested portion of the internet.  In these cases you may experience uncomfortable lag between two users in a dialogue.

It is no doubt that majority of phone users still favor old fashioned phone system but the number of people using internet phone is actually catching up because of its significant low costs and advanced features (many of which still need improvement though but they get there!).  No one can argue about the costs for making internet calls regardless if they are domestic to international phones, they cost from free to fraction of what is supposed to cost if done by landline. Some of internet phone providers offer free trial for users to test before commitment to sign up for membership.  Do take advantages from these offers to shop around because like those phone companies it is sometimes hard to find the best packages for your needs.

AT&T definitely has control of the marketplace with the iPhone and that’s what SHOULD be looked at…not Apple. Do you think Apple really cares whether Google offers Google Voice on its platform…. as long as masses are purchasing their telephones – and they’re buying these life-changing devices! I enjoy mine! The missed phone calls are one too many another (AT&T), but the telephone is amazing! One thing I wish it would have got is Flash to play videos from certain websites!
