Is franchise business right for you

If you have some funds and want to open a business but you are not sure what do to, the most likely option you want to consider is franchising. Franchising opportunities enable you to tap right in to an established business models and continue to advance your business operations without worrying about research and development work or costs.  In fact, franchising is a classic business model that a host company uses to distribute the company’s products or services through a chain of retail business operators who own and run their businesses independently.  Franchising opportunities are available in all sectors, mostly seen in foods and services industries.

Before you make a pitch on buying franchising opportunities to your host company, you should know what do franchisors (the host company that sells you franchise) look for in franchising candidate.  Keep in mind franchising opportunity may sound like easy entrance to the business world as seen by most newcomers but in reality it is not for every one. It takes certain characteristics and traits to make a successful retail operator. First and foremost, potential candidates have to show their enthusiasm, abundant knowledge and possible passion for the brand they are after.  Second, they have to be “people friendly” regarding which franchising sector they are going to get in, any thing from food chain, to convenience store, hair salon, gas station etc.  Do review the following questions and answer them honestly to yourself before move on to next steps.

• As an owner and operator who must keep up with an established business model, are you able to work around the clock in the first years upon establishment to get your business up and running.  Being a franchising unit is harder than being an independent business unit because you really have to keep up with your fellow franchisees and even rivals who are located a few miles away from where you are. This adds more pressure than you actually think it does.  If you can not afford that heavy work load, can you afford to hire a capable manager to run it?
• After visiting other franchisees, how do you see your ability to run the system exactly like it is supposed to be?  Every modification of your own adding to the system may cause you risk of having your franchising agreement revised or terminated. Whatever said in the agreement must be followed 100%.  If you are a free spirited person this franchising business may not be right for you.
• Can you manage the business effectively? Many franchisees come into the business with various backgrounds.  They can be engineers, teachers, lawyers, students who may not have any background in business.  How fast can your learn and practice basic business principles such as bookkeeping, inventories management, human resources management, selling and marketing activities, customer services.  Although franchisors will provide you with training and support along the way but you as the operators will do most of the work and make sure to have effective implementation plans rolled out.  Last but not least, are you savvy in the financial and legal aspects because they are the bread and butter of business.  If you can not do so, can you afford to hire some one with capability and importantly can you monitor them to make sure business is kept in compliance and perhaps you can learn new skills from them.
